The walk from Cotehele to Calstock along the river Tamar provides spectacular views of the river and surrounding woodland landscape. The stunning viaduct over Calstock is a key landmark as you approach the village. Trains pass over this viaduct between Calstock and Plymouth.
As a starting point, you can park in the National Trust car park at Cotehele Quay (PL12 6TA)and then walk the 1.5 miles along the river, with the first portion of the walk being adjacent to, and below, the Cotehele estate. Dogs can run off their leads on the path which is never at the water’s edge.
Once in Calstock you can enjoy some excellent refreshments at the very friendly Lishe café, which welcomes dogs, or pop into either of the pubs (The Boot Inn and the Calstock Arms). It’s then time for the walk back along the river but with a different perspective with the river now on your left, to make it altogether a satisfying 3-mile walk.
